As much as technology has made our lives easier, it has also complicated things a bit. As far as our online identities go, many people just plainly decide not to join the world of social media at all, or to get rid of it if they’ve already joined. Reasons for quitting social media vary, but mostly relate to the time that social media seems to steal time and the fact that it doesn’t necessarily make people feel better about themselves and life in general.
For celebrities, on the other hand, ensuring privacy is a way of life, and it makes sense that many public figures have decided to abandon social media for a quieter life.
Some celebrities have decided to forgo social media (and sometimes even the internet and cellphones) altogether, and if you think they’re all Baby Boomers, you’re mistaken.
1. Daniel Radcliffe
You might ascribe it to the fact that he is well acquainted with a magical world of another kind entirely, but the Harry Potter star has almost no presence on social media to speak of. Radcliffe has a Google+ account, but that’s where it stops.
2. Christopher Walken
Having Walken on this list probably doesn’t surprise you, but the actor’s disdain for tech runs deeper than you might expect. In fact, it has been reported that Walken receives a phone when he starts shooting a film, which he then gives back to producers once filming has ended. Unsurprisingly, Walken also avoids computers, saying that it’s not “peaceful” to use.
3. Sandra Bullock
Audience favourite Sandy avoids social media because she views it as a “false projection of one’s life”. Bullock prefers not creating an unrealistic expectation for online followers by posting about her personal life, and regards especially selfies as a way of only showing the very best aspects of people’s lives.
4. Jennifer Lawrence
The award-winning actress doesn’t care for social media, and has stated that she doesn’t really “get” the appeal that it has. In an interview with BBC Radio 1 in 2014, Lawrence said, “I’m not very good on phones or technology. I cannot really keep up with emails, so the idea of Twitter is so unthinkable to me.”
5. Emma Stone
Lawrence’s bestie, Emma Stone, is just as baffled by the fascination that social media has for people, seeing that she thinks it just tends to breed a false view of success. “It makes me so crazy to look at social media,” she said in an interview with ELLE. “When you see people like, ‘This is the best life ever! I couldn’t be happier,’ you’re like, ‘Shut up, that is not true.’”
6. Vanessa Hudgens
The High School Musical star thinks that social media doesn’t leave anything to the imagination. In an interview with People magazine, Hutchens explained: “I think the internet is ruining everyone, and it just makes everybody way too accessible – it just takes away the glamour and mystery from our business.”
7. George Clooney
This heartthrob’s scorn for certain social media platforms is something he doesn’t mince his words about. “I’d rather have a rectal examination on live TV by a fellow with cold hands than have a Facebook page,” Clooney said to Esquire.
