Video on demand: This is what’s available in SA

The launch of DEOD is the latest development in the South African media landscape, as online video on demand (VOD) services gain footing in the country.

Ranging from video on demand (VOD), subscription video on demand (SVOD) and transactional video on demand (TVOD – here content is rented per series or movie), various such services have launched in the country in the past few years.

This is what’s on offer:

Netflix

Cost: US$9.99 per month for the standard package (+-R130)
What you get: Netflix offers access to streaming content, including movies, TV shows and documentaries. Certain content is available for download and offline viewing.

Showmax

Cost: R99 per month
What you get: A Showmax subscription will give you access to various TV shows and movies, including loads of local content. Content is available to download and watch offline for a 48-hour period.

PrideTV

Cost: R79 per month
What you get: Recently launched in South Africa, PrideTV has a range of movies and LGBT-centred content available, which can be downloaded on demand.

iTunes

Cost: This is a video on demand service and costs vary depending on the content you choose.
What you get: iTunes offers an extensive library of media content, including movies and TV shows which can be rented and/or bought and downloaded.

Google Play Movies

Cost: This is a video on demand service and costs vary depending on the content you choose.
What you get: Various TV shows and movies are available to buy or rent in the Google Play Store.

DEOD

Cost: R189 for DEOD Premium, which includes all content. Various packages are available, as well as TVOD options.
What you get: DEOD consists of news, sport and entertainment on demand channels, with movie rental options available as well.

Amazon Prime

Cost: $3 per month. (+- R40)
What you get: Amazon Prime offers a variety of TV shows and movies for streaming, including some award winning original Amazon shows.
